After a night in Lima on arrival you take a short flight up to Trujillo on the coast. Here you will have a private guided tour of the Temple of the Moon and visit the colourful colonial centre of the city. Your northward journey continues crossing the coastal desert plain to Chiclayo. There are numerous ancient sites around the city, pre-Hispanic cultures including Chimu and Moche, with many golden treasures being discovered all of the time throughout Lambeyeque department. These are displayed in the Sican National Museum and new Royal Tombs of Sipan museum.
Leaving the lowlands you take a long steady drive up one of the coastal valleys, forever climbing higher through interesting villages and perhaps stopping to see ancient rock art. Eventually you descend into the grand open valley of cattle farms and the colonial city of Cajamarca with its fabulous central plaza. You are now well off the beaten trails and can indulge in this city. Around there are some interesting sights and some wonderful landscapes at Cumbemayo and it is an excellent place for day walks. For those with an interest in birds this is also a good location for searching for some endemic and near-endemic species such as the grey-bellied comet hummingbird. The hot springs at the country hotel here ensure that this is a relaxing destination to end this tour.
There is the option to extend this trip by following the remote mountain route to Chachapoyas and Kuelap through some beautiful Andean mountains. For bird watchers this is a rewarding route and for those with a strong interest in culture and local peoples it is an outstanding journey.
