Shumba

Shumba lies somewhere out on the 52km long Busanga Plains of the northern Kafue National Park. Just a few fig trees mark the exact location among the endless grasslands and small water channels that make up these seasonal floodplains. In around million hectares this is the only luxury option, sister camp, Busanga Bush Camp being a more modest safari option is a little distance away.

Despite its remoteness Shumba is sophisticated, amenable and very relaxed. There are 6 large and wonderfully appointed tents each with a delightful outdoor seating area from which to gaze incredulously across the immense plains. All are interconnected with the main public area by stilted wooden walkways giving the camp a compact feeling. The main area has a bar, lounge and indoor dining area whilst outside on the deck is a spacious seating area and small pool. The boma is used some evenings for meals.

Safari activities are dependent on the season with boating activities whilst the waters recede and then game drives take over. Hot air balloon safaris are possible from August onwards each year and are very highly recommended!

The staff at Shumba, which incidentally is named after the local pride of lions, are very personal, friendly and importantly passionate about the wildlife and conservation of this truly wild part of Africa.

Wilderness Safaris have poured money into conserving Busanga Plains and the incredible numbers of wildlife that inhabit this area. Consequently, wildlife populations are increasing making this a world class safari destination.

If you are looking for a quiet part of Africa, little frequented, terrific wildlife viewing from an elegant camp then Shumba is a must. With an airstrip nearby Shumba is easily reached from Lusaka or Livingstone.
