Luambe Camp is a small owner run safari camp in one of the smallest national parks in Zambia. The camp is the only accommodation in Luambe National Park which covers an area of just over 250km2. However, it does lie in the Luangwa Valley, sited on the east side of the river between more famous neighbours South Luangwa and North Luangwa.
Marcus as set 4 large very comfortable tents under trees close to the river bank where there is a permanent pool for hippos right throughout the dry season. Obviously, with a constant supply of water this is also a popular spot for other wildlife too. Pathways from the tents lead to the main area where there is a lovely thatched dining area and campfire. The riverfront here is a nice place to relax with a drink. The atmosphere is of a low key camp and fits perfectly with the type of client likely to seek out such a safari location.
Game drives are through the riverine forest and out on to the grasslands of the Chipuka Plains beyond. Elephant, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, impala, puku and kudu are readily seen whilst lion, leopard and wild dog are also sighted. Bush walks are also possible whilst sundowners and a campfire are often enjoyed on the dry river bed. One feature later in the season is to leave camp early and head upstream a little to walk out opposite a river bank full of nesting carmine bee-eaters and enjoy a morning coffee.
We would highly recommend Luambe Camp to for those looking to escape the crowds around Mfuwe Gate in South Luangwa, those looking to explore and new are and especially those wanting a piece of wilderness to themselves. It sits well in a tailor made safari holiday with northern camps in South Luangwa as well as Mwaleshi Camp in North Luangwa. Furthermore, visiting Luambe Camp greatly helps conservation efforts for this little national park.
Luambe is reached most easily from Mfuwe airport after a 4 hour drive crossing the Nsefu sector of South Luangwa. However, if visiting Luambe Camp it is likely that you will come via another safari camp in South Luangwa and we can discuss tailor made options with you.
