Just a ten minute drive from Hokitika Rimu Lodge offers a peaceful and unspoilt environment boasting magnificent views. There are four guest suites, which are comfortably appointed with river and mountain views and breakfast can be taken in the dining room or out on the deck in the sunshine.
Each of the spacious guest rooms face north to take full advantage of the beautiful sunrise, two are on the first floor and two on the ground floor - the ground floor rooms open out onto the terrace. All have beautiful ensuite bathrooms, complimentary wi-fi and tea and coffee making facilities.
The small village of Rimu was actually named after the tall native rimu forest which once stretched as far as the eye could see. Back in 1882 gold was discovered and very swiftly thereafter this quiet village was home to 500 miners, 6 hotels, 2 banks, 2 bakeries and a convent! Consequently gold became hugely significant. The area is now favoured by artists and there is a large concentration of arts, crafts, jewellers and galleries in the region.
Hokitika is a great base from which to explore and alongside the fabulous galleries there are numerous other attractions. White Heron Sanctuary Tour operates tours to the only white heron breeding colony on the west coast, whilst the ancient glaciers of Fox and Franz Josef are just two hours south. You can take to the air with scenic flights over Mt Cook/ Aoraki or even as far south as Milford Sound, rafting and brown trout fishing are also extremely popular.
